Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Intent

At Bredgar we believe that all children are unique and we recognise that children develop and learn in different ways. We build positive, warm and encouraging relationships with the children and families which foster a sense of belonging. Through providing an enabling environment we cover the education and care of all children in early years provision, regardless of their need. We teach children by providing essential and purposeful play, providing challenge in a variety of contexts, responding to their individual needs and providing direct teaching; ensuring that we foster the characteristics of effective early learning.

Our curriculum design is underpinned by the EYFS framework, ensuring that the seven areas of learning are interconnected, enabling children to develop in a holistic manner whilst also linking to our school values of leadership, organisation, resilience, initiative and communication.

Implementation

Before the children have started at Bredgar, we begin to build our relationships with families through our 'New Parents Evening', home visits and communicating with nurseries/ settings that the child has attended. This supports an effective transition into starting school and building those foundations of relationships.

During the first term, staff use ongoing observations and assessments as well as completing the Government Baseline Assessment to identify starting points for each child. We then use this information to monitor the progress all children make each term and identify any need for additional support.

Please find below our approach to EYFS, which outlines in more detail how we implement our curriculum.

Impact

The impact of our EYFS provision is evidenced through the remarkable progress and achievements of our pupils. Children demonstrate a strong sense of belonging, confidence, and self-esteem, setting a firm foundation for their future learning journey. Our rigorous approach to assessment enables us to track children's development effectively, identify areas for further support, and celebrate their accomplishments. Additionally, the impact of our curriculum is shown every day when we see the sheer joy of children recognising their successes and achievements.

By fostering a love for learning and nurturing environment our children in EYFS develop the skills they need to become curious, life-long learners which a great foundation upon which they can continue to build throughout the rest of their time at our school.
