Physical Education
Intent
At Bredgar Church of England Primary School, our vision for Physical Education (PE) is deeply rooted in the Parable of the Mustard Seed, which teaches us that great things grow from the smallest beginnings. Just as the tiny mustard seed grows into a tree that provides shelter and support, we believe in nurturing every child’s physical potential, confidence and well-being, ensuring they flourish into strong, resilient individuals who support and uplift others.
We believe that every child has the potential to develop into a physically and emotionally strong individual who positively impacts their community. Through our PE curriculum, we sow the seeds for a future of well-being, perseverance and shared success.
Implementation
At Bredgar Church of England Primary School, PE is taught twice a week. We deliver high-quality PE lessons that are inclusive, engaging and progressive, ensuring that all children:
- Participate in a broad range of physical activities, including team games, gymnastics, dance and outdoor learning.
- Learn the importance of perseverance and effort, understanding that small improvements lead to long-term success.
- Reflect on their progress, celebrating personal achievements and encouraging others.
At Bredgar Church of England Primary School we also buy in to the support of Take Pride. This is a company that supports the teaching and learning of PE. Each week a qualified PE teacher teaches each class alongside the class teacher. This provides support from an expert and also opportunities for professional development – particularly in the areas of PE that teachers may be less familiar with.
PE lessons follow the school’s agreed pedagogy for teaching and learning, using the five-part format of: Review, Teach, Practise, Apply and Reflect.
Impact
Teachers assess the children every term against the skills that they have been learning. This is uploaded onto Insight, our assessment tracker.
Within lessons, misconceptions are addressed and children are supported where necessary in their application of the taught skills.
Extra-Curricular
We have many after-school clubs that all children (of all ages and abilities) are able to attend free of charge. As well as the teachers that provide an after-school club, Take Pride also have one each week. Some examples of after-school clubs that we have had are (and not limited to):
- Dance
- Football
- Tag Rugby
- Ramblers
- Running
- Boccia and Curling
- Athletics
- Fitness
- Netball
Competitions
part of a Multi-Academy Trust we are able to provide a range of competitions for the children between the schools. This can be a range of sporting events from football competitions to dance festivals and athletics competitions (and more!).
As part of the Take Pride package, we also have 3 competitions per year within the 3 schools that access this support.
We have made links with the local rugby club and attend their tag rugby festival each year.
All children are given the opportunity to attend sporting events and competitions and they are accessible for all children in our school.
